Vintage Golf Club Covers

These Vintage Golf Club Covers are a great gift for Dad’s birthday or Father’s Day.  Made to look like novelty knits, these covers are embellished with cute pom-poms, so they look like they’re straight out of the 1940’s.  For the golfer in your life, this is a fun and meaningful gift that’s sure to be appreciated for years to come.

Materials:

  • 1 skein RED HEART® Super Saver® yarn in each of the following colors:
  • Real Teal-656 (A)
  • Buff-334 (B)
  • Grey Heather-400 (C)
  • Susan Bates® Double pointed needles: one set each 4mm [US 6] and 5mm [US 8]
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Gauge:  16 sts = 4″ [10 cm]; 32 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in St st with larger needles. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needles to obtain the gauge.
  • Pattern Stitches:
  • Stripe Sequence 1
  • Rounds 1-3:  A
  • Rounds 4-5: B
  • Round 6: C
  • Rounds 7-8: B
  • Stripe Sequence 2
  • Rounds 1-3: B
  • Round 4-5: C
  • Rounds 6-8: B

Instructions:

Putter or Iron Cover

With smaller needles and using A, cast on 20 sts.  Arrange stitches evenly around three double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.

Round 1:  [K1, p1]  around until piece measures 5″ [12.5 cm] from beginning.

Increase Row: *K4, knit front and back of stitch; repeat from * to end of round – 24 sts.

Next Row: Change to larger needles and working in St st, work Stripe Sequence 1 3 times.

Repeat Rounds 1-3 once AND AT THE SAME TIME, when piece measures 3

¼” [8.25 cm] from beginning of St st, work decrease rounds as follows:

Round 1: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of Round -18 sts.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round -12 sts.

Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round – 6 sts.

Round 6: Knit.

Finishing

Thread tail through remaining 6 stitches and pull to close. Knot to secure. With using A, B, and C make a pompom and attach to top.

Weave in ends.

Large Cover (will fit #3 or #5 club)

With smaller needles and using A, cast on 32 sts.  Arrange stitches evenly around three double-pointed needles. Join, taking care not to twist sts. Place marker for beginning of round.

Round 1:  [K1, p1] around until piece measures 10″ [25 cm] from beginning.

Increase Row: *K3, knit front and back; repeat from * to end of round – 40 sts.

Next Row: Change to larger needles and work in St st for 1 ½” [3.8 cm]. Work in Stripe Sequence 2 once.  Work color A for 1″ [2.54 cm] more then begin decrease rounds as follows:

Round 1: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * to end of Round – 32 sts.

Round 2: Knit.

Round 3: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round – 24 sts.

Round 4: Knit.

Round 5: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * to end of round – 16 sts.

Round 6: Knit.

Round 7: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round – 8 sts.

Round 8: Knit.

Finishing

Thread tail through remaining 8 stitches and pull to close. Knot to secure. Using A, B, and C make a pompom and attach to top.

Weave in ends.
